This is a solved Practice Puzzle. Notice how the Knight is on a grey square while its footprint is in yellow. Notice how the King is ‘anchored’ by the Knight.
This is a solved Practice Puzzle made with two pieces. Notice how the Knight is on a grey square while its footprint is in yellow. Notice how the King is anchored by the Knight.

Place anchored chess pieces to match the puzzle footprint (AMBIT).

What is an ‘anchored’ piece?

  • A piece that is placed on a grey or white square is anchored by default.
  • A piece in a Yellow/Orange square is anchored only if it is within the footprint of at least one other piece.
  • Two pieces can anchor each other if they are both in Yellow/Orange squares and within each others’ respective footprints.

“ HOW TO PLAY AMBIT”

Game Play

  • Select and place: Click a piece from the piece rack and then click on a square on the chessboard to place the selected piece.
  • Valid Placement: If a piece is correctly placed, its footprint will lie entirely within the puzzle footprint.
  • Invalid Placement: If a piece is placed such that its own footprint goes outside the puzzle footprint, it’s an invalid move. The game will visually indicate this using red squares, and you will lose a life.
  • Win: When the combined footprint of your pieces matches the puzzle footprint, the puzzle will stop automatically. Your score is the number of green stars you have left.
  • There is NO LIMIT on the NUMBER OF PIECES you place on the board as long as they do not have footprints outside the puzzle footprint.
  • You can place pieces on squares of ANY COLOR. White, Grey or Yellow/Orange
  • Lives: You start with three lives. A life is lost for every invalid placement.
  • Game Over: The game ends if all lives are lost.

Details

  • Puzzle Footprint: Highlighted in shades of Yellow/Orange.
  • Piece Footprint: Each piece has a unique impact footprint based on standard chess moves.
  • Important: By definition, the square occupied by a piece is NOT within its own impact footprint. It can, however, be within the footprint of other pieces on the board. This rule has significant implications on the game play.
  • Here is how: When you place a piece on a Yellow/Orange square, remember that it HAS to be in the footprint of ANOTHER PIECE.
  • ALSO, regardless of where you place a piece, anywhere on the board, its footprint should be within the puzzle footprint.
  • No deletes: Once a piece is placed on a square, it can’t be replaced or deleted.
  • No blocking: Pieces do not block each others’ footprint.

Examples:

This puzzle isn’t solved yet because although the whole puzzle footprint seems covered, the Bishop is not anchored. In other words, the square it is standing on isn’t in any other piece’s footprint.
This is a solved Puzzle made with three pieces. Notice how the Rook is on a white square while its footprint is in Yellow/Orange. Notice how the King is anchored by the Knight, which is in turn, anchored by the Rook, which stands on a white square outside the puzzle footprint.

Here is the one rule that makes AMBIT interesting.

“By definition, the square occupied by a piece is NOT within its own impact footprint. It can, however, be within the footprint of other pieces on the board. This rule has significant implications on the game play.”
